Visualization techniques involve creating mental images of desired outcomes and experiences. These techniques can range from simple daydreaming to structured visualization exercises. In the context of addiction recovery, visualization helps us picture ourselves living a life free from addiction, achieving our recovery goals, and experiencing positive emotions and events.
I think that the reason my vision board has had such a profound effect on my life is because I have aphantasia (blind mind’s eye). About a year ago, I discovered that most people can see pictures in their minds. All I can see is blackness. I almost wish I had never figured it out, but I did, and I have managed to find effective alternatives to visualization.
If you want to know if you have aphantasia, close your eyes and picture a red apple. If you see an apple, you are aphantasia-free.
From what I have learned in talking to people about it, there are different levels. Some people are partial aphants (as I have come to call us), and they might see images but no colors or maybe blob-like images. If you have questions, feel free to contact me.

Once you are satisfied with the layout, secure the images and words on the board with glue or tape.

As someone who has been on this journey for eight years, I can personally attest to the transformative power of vision boards in addiction recovery. Creating and regularly engaging with my vision board has been a great way to gain clarity, motivation, and hope during some of the most challenging times. It served as a constant reminder of my goals and the person I aspired to become.
In the early stages of my recovery, I was often overwhelmed by the enormity of my personal goals. (I spent so much of my life wasting away in jail, administratively segregated, that I have become a bit of an overachiever wannabe.)
During these times, my vision board became a beacon of light, guiding me through the darkness. I maintained a positive outlook by visualizing my future success and seeing tangible representations of my goals, even when faced with setbacks. The images and words on my vision board were not just pictures and phrases but symbols of my aspirations and the life I was determined to build. Not to mention, I have a good time dedicating time to my recovery vision board and my representation of my future sober lifestyle.
My vision board has evolved throughout my recovery, reflecting my growth and changing aspirations. This is shown in my practice of continuously adding new things to represent my ever-changing desired outcome and removing items as I have accomplished, achieved, or surpassed its contents.
As I achieved certain milestones, I updated my board to include new short-term goals and long-term dreams, contributing to my strong vision for a brighter future. This process of continuous reflection and renewal kept me engaged and motivated, which is often difficult with my ADHD. It allowed me to celebrate my achievements, no matter how small, and to stay focused on my long-term objectives.
One of the most significant benefits I experienced was the boost in self-efficacy and confidence. By consistently visualizing myself overcoming challenges, achieving goals, and ultimately accomplishing whatever I had set out to do, I developed a stronger belief in my ability to succeed and stay focused on the important things. This newfound confidence empowered me to take proactive steps toward my recovery and handle setbacks resiliently.
Incorporating my vision board into my daily routine also played a crucial role in my mental well-being. Morning and evening rituals of reflecting on my vision board helped set a positive tone for the day and provided a sense of closure in the evening. These moments of mindfulness and visualization became anchors in my daily life, grounding me and reinforcing my commitment to my recovery journey. It may sound like a lot, but I think you will find you engage with little to no effort once you get started.
I also found that sharing my vision board with my friends, family, and others who visited my home added another layer of accountability and encouragement. Discussing my goals and the significance of the images with others strengthened my resolve.
